Children in a changing climate

project Critically analysing risk communication pathways

theme: risk communication

This case study-based research will critically re-evaluate models of risk communication based on an examination of the agency of children and young people to convey disaster risk information.

overview

By improving understanding on risk communication by young people and their ability to persuade others to take actions to reduce risks the research aims to contribute to more effective implementation and facilitation of disaster risk reduction in the context of a growing global disaster burden. In doing so, it aims to influence emerging policies and practices of disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation.

Key research questions include:

  • How do young-people conceptualise and communicate disaster ‘risk' in disaster prone areas of developing countries?

  • Are young people effective agents of change through both communicating risks and promoting adaptive actions?

  • What implications do the above findings have for theoretical approaches and models of risk communication and management?
