Children in a changing climate

theme rights and governance

overview

This theme considers how children’s rights to a secure future in a changing climate should be constituted and the implications of pursuing an advocacy and operational strategy for a ‘rights-based’ governance approach to adaptation.

key questions

‘Child rights to adaptation' is an area devoid of research so far. Drawing on experiences of child rights work in other areas (disasters, HIV/AIDS, conflict, social protection, poverty), combined with innovative action-research with children in multiple countries, research under this theme asks:

  • How children's views on their right to adaptation and a secure future?
  • What are the characteristics of a rights frameworks for child-centred adaptation and mitigation?

  • What does a child rights-based approach to adaptation programming look like?

programme linkages

Research under this theme will support agencies wanting to engage in rights-based adaptation programming. Action-research with children will link directly with influencing work carried out under ccc-policy in providing a space for children to voice and articulate their views and policy demands. Framing children's welfare in a changing climate in rights-based language can contribute to sensitising policy makers to the urgency of this agenda.
